The traditional Outlander technically falls into the compact SUV category. But don't let that fool you! With three rows of seats and room for seven passengers, it stands out as one of the biggest compact SUVs available today. It is also built to handle plenty with its impressive 5,192 lbs GVWR. The Outlander comes ready for adventure with 8.4 inches of ground clearance - perfect for those off-road excursions. This SUV stands 68.8 inches tall, stretches 185 inches long, and measures 84.4 inches wide with mirrors unfolded. Thanks to its 106.5-inch wheelbase, the interior feels wonderfully spacious. You get a maximum of 64.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats. Without the sunroof option, passengers enjoy generous headroom from front to back: 40.6 inches in the first row, 39.1 in the second, and 34.5 in the third. Legroom follows suit with 41.7, 39.9, and 18.7 inches respectively. |
The Outlander Sport looks more like what people expect from a compact SUV. It seats five passengers and presents a smaller profile than its siblings. This compact design means less cargo space - 49.5 cubic feet behind the front seats. The Sport weighs in at 4,343 lbs but maintains an impressive 8.5 inches of ground clearance. It measures 171.9 inches long, 71.3 inches wide, and stands 64.8 inches tall. Inside, you'll find 39.4 inches of headroom up front and 37.9 inches in back. The legroom measures 41.6 inches for front passengers and 36.3 inches for back. |
The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid has a completely different setup under the hood, so it's a bit heftier at 6,063 lbs. Ground clearance dips slightly to 7.9 inches for the lower trims. Height, width, and length are pretty much the same as the regular Outlander. So, the interior dimensions of the headroom and legroom are similar. The cargo area gets a tiny boost to 64.7 cubic feet. Every inch counts, right? |

The Outlander makes a bold statement with its distinctive front grille and dynamic shield design. Sharp character lines flow from front to back, creating an elegant yet powerful presence on the road. Step inside to discover premium materials like leather or semi-aniline leather cushions. Smart construction features include double-pane front windows and windshields that reduce noise and vibration. The Triple-Zone Climate Control ensures everyone stays comfortable. The Black Edition adds extra sophistication with its black Dynamic Shield, dark chrome window trim, black roof rails, and black semi-aniline premium leather-appointed seats. |
The Sport takes a different approach to design. Its rounded, compact shape creates a more athletic appearance. The front grille appears smaller, and sleeker headlights give it an aggressive edge. The Trail edition, exclusive to this model, adds special badges and resilient trim molding. |
The Outlander PHEV shares many design elements with the standard Outlander. One standout feature includes the available Power Panoramic Sunroof that floods the cabin with natural light. From the outside, it's very similar to the Outlander. But it does come with some extras, like the silver roof rails. |

Under the hood of the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander, you'll find a 2.5-liter MIVEC DOHC 4-cylinder engine. It puts out 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, giving it the power to tow up to 2,000 lbs. The fuel economy is pretty solid, too. You're looking at 24 mpg in the city, 31 on the highway, for a combined 27 mpg. The Outlander also features something called Super All-Wheel Control. It has six drive modes - eco, normal, tarmac, gravel, snow, and mud - so you're ready for any terrain. Finally, dual-pinion electric power steering ensures responsive handling in any situation. |
The Outlander Sport is a smaller car, so it's got a slightly smaller 2.0L MIVEC engine. But it still puts out a respectable 148 HP and 145 lb-ft of torque. If you go for the higher trim levels, you can get the same 2.4L version of the MIVEC engine that's in the PHEV. That bumps you up to 167 lb-ft of torque and 168 horsepower. Mileage on the Sport comes in at 23 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 26 combined. If you opt for the more powerful engine, you only lose one mpg on the highway. |
The Plug-in Hybrid version of the Outlander is a different beast altogether. The range on this thing is unbelievable at 420 miles. In fact, it's so eco-friendly that it was named the 2025 Family Green Car of the Year by Green Car Journal. It's powered by a 2.4L MIVEC engine and twin electric motors. Those electric motors can run on 100% electric power for up to 38 miles. The quietness of electric mode is something you have to experience for yourself. Various drive modes include EV mode, Save Mode, and charge mode. In its most efficient settings, this hybrid achieves an estimated 64 MPGe. Regenerative braking helps capture energy that would otherwise be lost. |
Technology
A modern vehicle isn't complete without modern tech. Each Outlander model comes packed with features to enhance your driving experience.

The Bose sound system delivers premium audio quality. An available 10.8-inch Head-Up Display shows important information right in your line of sight. MyQ Connected Garage lets you control your garage door from your vehicle. |
The Outlander Sport includes most standard tech features but uses smaller screens ranging from 7-8 inches depending on trim level. While it doesn't include the Bose system, it does offer a three-month SiriusXM Platinum Plan trial subscription. |
With the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, you can use the My MITSUBISHI CONNECT app to stay connected to your vehicle from your smartphone. It has plenty of hybrid-specific features. For instance, you can check your range, schedule your next charge, and more. All from your phone. The center display is a bit smaller at 9 inches, but it still has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. |
Safety
Mitsubishi prioritizes safety across the entire Outlander family. Each model includes advanced features to protect you and your passengers.

But that's still plenty to keep everyone safe. It also has Active Stability Control that continuously monitors the grip of your tires. That's especially important on wet or slippery roads. The Sport features Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution technology, or RISE for short. Outlander Plug-in HybridThis PHEV model includes all the safety features of the standard version.
